‘Gobsmacked’: Inside the family connection between I’m A Celebrity 2025 contestant Samantha Moitzi and serial killer Ivan Milat

A reality star competing in this season of I’m A Celebrity is related to one of the country’s most infamous serial killers.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmate Samantha Moitzi is the great-niece of Ivan Milat, one of Australia’s most notorious serial killers.

Moitzi first rose to fame on Season Nine of Married At First Sight, where she was paired with the cheeky Al Perkins.

Although their on-screen marriage didn’t last, Moitzi carved out a successful career as an influencer and podcaster, amassing more than 117,000 Instagram followers.

Hollywood star Jane Fonda is coming to Australia for a series of events.

Now, the 30-year-old Queenslander is competing in the 11th season of I’m A Celeb in South Africa, representing The Butterfly Foundation.

During a conversation in the jungle with fellow contestant Matty Johnson, Moitzi reflected on her experience on MAFS, saying she “truly believed” she would “find her match”.

However, one surprising detail about her family history has also come to light.

Moitzi is the granddaughter of Milat’s younger sister, Shirley Soire.

According to reports, this revelation shocked producers during filming for MAFS in 2022.

A source told Daily Mail Australia that tension arose when Perkins suggested watching Wolf Creek, the 2005 horror film loosely inspired by Milat’s crimes.

“Al wanted to watch Wolf Creek one night and things turned awkward really quickly,” the insider said.

“….Sam was hesitant but just had to tell him. He was gobsmacked.”

Milat, who died of cancer in 2019 while serving a life sentence, was convicted in 1996 of murdering seven young backpackers in the early 1990s.

His victims, aged 19 to 22, were hitchhiking south of Sydney when they crossed paths with him.

The crimes, committed in the Belanglo State Forest in New South Wales, shocked the nation.

The murders inspired the cult horror film Wolf Creek, starring John Jarratt.

While some celebrities, such as Moitzi, are reportedly earning as little as $35,000, others are said to command significantly higher fees.

The campmates this season include comedian Dave Hughes, Big Brother winner Reggie Bird, rugby league legend Sam Thaiday, and swimmer Shayna Jack.
